About UsA Brief History University Park Baptist Church was organized in the spring of 1948 when D. B. South, her first pastor, asked the developer of the University Park Subdivision for a plot of land on the corner of Tulane and Cincinnati for a church. University Park Subdivision was named for the nearby St. Mary’s University. The young church grew as the G.I. bill provided home ownership and education opportunities for post-war veterans. Over the years the church has had many distinguished men serve as her pastor and on her staff, including a foreign missionary, past President and Vice President of the SBC, and BGCT, a current seminary professor, an associational missionary and the current President of LifeWay, Jimmy Draper. University Park has sponsored a number of missions which have become prominent Baptist churches in the San Antonio Area. While at University Park, 18 of her young people have answered God's call to serve as pastors, denominational professionals and as church staff members. In 1988 University Park merged with Metro Baptist and became Metro Park Baptist church. In 1997 the name was changed back to University Park, once again reflecting the community that had birthed her. The face of the community has changed and University Park has mirrored that change. In fact, changing with the community has always been one of University Park’s greatest strengths. She has gracefully changed with her community. When other churches have died off as their community changed, University Park has thrived on the change. University Park continues to be a strong loving church with a bright future: “A multi-cultural family church where everyone is at home.” Family Gatherings - Sunday 9:30 & 10:45, Wednesday 6:30 pm |
